Running is awesome and cathartic and fun and all of those wonderful adjectives.
But so is music, right?
So, when I find songs that incorporate running of some kind, whether it’s running away from something, running to something, running around something, I get excited. Almost too excited.
Here’s a list of my recent (and some not so recent) findings. You can follow my ever expanding playlist here on Spotify.
Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine
This song holds a special place in my heart, because as I was running my first 8 mile run ever I got to around mile 7 and this song started playing. The dog days of that run were almost over.
But, I love this song for this part in particular:
Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father
Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your longing behind
You can’t carry it with you if you want to survive
Let it go, my friend.
Send My Love (To Your New Lover) by Adele
Oh, Adele, how you’ll always pull on the heartstrings of your listeners. Y’all have probably all heard this song by now, but if this line doesn’t get you pumped up, honey I don’t know what will:
I was running, you were walking
You couldn’t keep up, you were falling down (down)
Mmm.. bye Felicia. Sorry you couldn’t keep up.
Run it! by Chris Brown
Okay, yeah. I know this song isn’t about actually physically running, but it has the word “run” in it and it’s fun to listen to while running. Clearly, the qualification process for this list isn’t that intricate.
Although apparently Chris Brown believes that all girls want to, “…[S]tay up , and party all night,” which actually sounds exhausting and is quite a generalization if I do say so myself.
Freedom by Beyonce (Not Available on Spotify)
This song comes from the newly notorious album, Lemonade. You may have heard of it.
If you have not yet heard this song and you like feeling empowered and pumped up, please download it now.
Hey! I’ma keep running
Cause a winner don’t quit on themselves
Write that bad boy on a piece of paper and repeat it till you don’t forget it.
Take a Walk by Passion Pit
Okay, this song isn’t necessarily about running either, but he walks. A lot. Like this many times:
I took a walk
Take a walk, take a walk, take a walk
Take a walk, take a walk, take a walk, (oh-ah-ohhhh)
I take a walk
Take a walk, take a walk, take a walk
Take a walk, take a walk, take a walk (oh-ah-oh-oh-oh-oh)
That’s a lot of walks. But, I love that he walks when things aren’t going so well and does so to figure stuff out. Just replace “walk” with “run.” Or, if you’re into interval training simply replace half of the verbs. Balance.
Carry On by Fun.
This one is deceivingly about running… well, about moving forward, and I didn’t realize it until I listened to it about 10 times while running. So, I’m gonna leave you with this:
May your past be the sound
Of your feet upon the ground.
Carry on.
